IATA – Modernizing Critical Systems for the International Air Transport Association

A long-term partnership dedicated to enhancing IATA’s performance, compliance and innovation

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is the trade association for the world’s airlines, representing over 370 airlines accounting for some 85% of global air traffic. The organization supports many areas of aviation activity and help formulate industry policy on critical aviation issues.

This includes critical services to the wider aviation industry. Among the services, IATA holds the exclusive global reference data for airport code assignment and distance calculations between destinations. This data is essential for establishing fare structures and airline loyalty programs.

The organization sought to assess its digital ecosystem, optimize operations, and build a technology roadmap to support future growth.

IATA’s Digital Solutions

With a long-established working relation with IATA, Wepoint has supported the organization in the creation and modernization of numerous critical application solutions, particularly in financial and regulatory areas.

Wepoint was tasked with conducting an in-depth review of the application ecosystem. The evaluation of internal capabilities, stakeholder consultations, and clarification of the long-term technology vision enabled the creation of a structured roadmap aligned with business objectives.

Our experts then defined business, functional, and non-functional requirements, reimagined the user experience, and established a clear strategy to determine which components should be eliminated, migrated, maintained, or completely reinvented.

This effort is part of a broader framework of continuous strategic support, including feature development, support for 23 applications, implementation of a training program to accelerate onboarding of new resources, and the launch of a support center in Tunis to ensure timely assistance to IATA’s European headquarters.

System modernisation: Efficiency, compliance and customer satisfaction

The partnership between IATA and Wepoint had a significant impact on overall operational efficiency. It enhanced deliverable quality and project governance while improving budget control and timeline adherence. Reducing the time required for UAT (User Acceptance Testing) and modernizing critical systems to maintain compliance with industry safety and regulatory standards contributed significantly to increase client satisfaction.

Throughout the project, Wepoint’s strategic leadership and deep knowledge of the aviation ecosystem were key to effectively addressing IATA’s complex challenges.

Result

Stronger alignment between digital services and the actual needs of the industry

Optimization of internal resources and clarification of innovation priorities

Ongoing improvement of the user experience across multiple platforms

Reinforcement of IATA’s central role as a key data provider in global air transport

Risk reduction associated with legacy systems through strategic modernization
